2016 Endorsements

Democratic Women of Santa Barbara County is pleased to announce that we have endorsed the Honorable Kamala D. Harris for the United States Senate.

Kamala D. Harris is the 32nd Attorney General of the State of California. She is the first woman, the first African American, and the first South Asian to hold the office in the history of California. She has worked to bring innovative and effective approaches to fighting crime, fighting for consumers, and fighting for equal rights for all.

As she states, "I want to be a voice for Californians on these issues and others that impact our state in the U.S. Senate. I will be a fighter for the next generation on the critical issues facing our country. I will be a fighter for middle class families who are feeling the pinch of stagnant wages and diminishing opportunity. I will be a fighter for our children who deserve a world-class education, and for students burdened by predatory lenders and skyrocketing tuition. And I will fight relentlessly to protect our coast, our immigrant communities and our seniors.

And we believe she will do just that.

Democratic Women of Santa Barbara County has endorsed Supervisor Salud Carbajal for the U.S. 24th Congressional District.

Our Endorsement Committee (EEL) conducted a rigorous and thorough review of the three Democratic candidates, Salud Carbajal, Helene Schneider, and Bill Ostrander. EEL developed a questionnaire and conducted interviews with Board members present. A painful and difficult choice confronted our Board, and our deliberations and vote were carefully conducted.

In the end, we felt that Salud's strengths of leadership and demonstrated ability to compromise and collaborate on the Board of Supervisors have instigated meaningful positive change in local government and bettered the lives of countless residents. We found his life story compelling as a child of immigrants and the son of a father who worked in the fields. We were impressed with his unwavering dedication to public service and his devotion to empowering those without voices.

We believe that Salud's values are at the root of his commitment to economic justice, championing the need for comprehensive immigration reform, safeguarding the environment, promoting pay and gender equality in the workplace, improving quality public education, fighting for sensible and reasonable gun reform legislation, and protecting women's reproductive rights and access to comprehensive health care.

We noted the impressive and significant array of endorsements that Salud has received and the financial support he has garnered locally, statewide, nationally and from all parts of the 24th Congressional District.
